MEET THE ARTIST
I have been making textiles for most of my life.
My original training was in weaving, where I developed a love of colour-and-weave techniques and textile structure. During my studies I was fortunate to receive Royal College bursaries for my weaving work, an experience that reinforced my fascination with colour, rhythm and the endless possibilities of cloth.
Although embroidery eventually became my main creative focus, I have never really left weaving behind. Instead, its influence runs quietly through everything I make, from the layered construction of my landscapes to my more abstract explorations of colour and texture.
I draw much of my inspiration from the changing skies, dramatic weather and wide views that surround my home. The coast at Birling Gap has recently been a source of inspiration, with its restless sea, chalk cliffs and textured beaches providing endless opportunities to explore stitch and surface.
I enjoy experimenting with materials and techniques, combining machine embroidery with hand stitch, dry felting, couching and unexpected textile elements. Sometimes a piece evolves exactly as planned; more often it takes on a life of its own, leading me in directions I could never have anticipated. I have learned that some of my favourite work begins with simply asking, "What happens if...?"
My work has been exhibited through the Embroiderers' Guild and other exhibitions, and I continue to develop new collections inspired by landscape, memory, light and abstraction.
Above all, I hope my work encourages people to look a little more closely—to notice the colours in a stormy sky, the sparkle of sunlight on the sea, or the quiet beauty hidden within everyday places.
